Production of Diphenylamine
Diphenylamine is produced by several methods:
- Reaction of aniline with chlorobenzene: Aniline reacts with chlorobenzene at high temperature with catalysts.
- Reduction of nitrobenzene: Nitrobenzene is reduced with hydrogen and catalysts.
- Reaction of phenol with aniline: Phenol and aniline interact with acid catalysts.
Applications of Diphenylamine
Diphenylamine is used in:
- Stabilizers: For explosives and polymers.
- Dye production: As an intermediate for the textile industry.
- Antioxidant: For lubricating oils and fuels.
- Metal protection: In corrosion inhibitors.
- Agriculture: To protect fruits from spoilage.
- Laboratory research: For the detection of nitrates and nitrites.
Safety and Environment
Diphenylamine is toxic! Protective equipment must be used and contact with skin should be avoided. Disposal must comply with environmental regulations.
